- Obtained from the plant Perilla frutescens, Thoiding (Perilla Seeds) is an indigenous flavouring agent used in the preparation of various Manipuri dishes.
- It is popular for its aroma and nutty flavour. Roasted and grinded perilla seeds are used in Singju, Hangam Thongba, and fruits salad.
- They are also pounded with ginger and chillies to make Thoiding Asuba Matum.
- On Makar Sankranti, eating Thoiding Kabok (perilla seeds sweet balls) is a must. Thoiding is rich in omega-3 fatty acid, protein, and fibre.
