Selected Plays of Khundrakpam Brajachand brings together six plays by Khundrakpam Brajachand (1952–1997), an important Manipuri playwright whose works are known for their striking metaphors, surreal situations, satire and exploration of human existence.
The collection presents characters who confront the irony of destiny in unusual and often thought-provoking circumstances. Through imaginative plots and symbolic situations, Brajachand examines human behaviour, social relationships, helplessness, desire, identity and the contradictions of everyday life.
The six selected plays include Tombagi Yum, Tomba Amasoong Kei, Chithi Puba Uchek, Shri Leikhidraba Tomba, Tingkhang and Sanakhya Amasoong Makhokta Sana Toppa Thang. Together, they demonstrate the playwright's distinctive dramatic style, combining serious themes with irony, metaphor and humour.
Khundrakpam Brajachand began contributing to Manipuri drama from his early years, with his first play, Ashibagee Wakat, written when he was 21. He left behind 13 plays and several incomplete works before his death in 1997.
He received recognition at the All Manipur Drama Festival, including the second best writer award in 1976 for Nashunglangee, the best writer award in 1977 for Heirangkhoinida, and the best script award in 1981 for Tingkhang.
About the Author
Khundrakpam Brajachand (1952–1997) was born in Imphal and was trained in law. He served as a Magistrate for more than 15 years while continuing his contribution to Manipuri theatre and literature. His plays are noted for their unconventional characters, surreal imagery, social observation and sharp sense of humour.
