Wari Macha Binodinigi brings together the short stories of renowned Manipuri writer Maharaj Kumari Binodini Devi (1922–2011), known simply as Binodini. This collection presents her stories in their original Manipuri language and in the Meitei Mayek script.
The collection brings together 26 stories: the 19 stories from Binodini's landmark 1965 collection Nunggairakta Chandramukhi, along with seven later unpublished stories. Together, they showcase her distinctive storytelling, graceful prose, vivid characters and keen observation of ordinary life.
Binodini's stories explore people, relationships, community, identity, belonging and social life in Manipur and beyond. Her writing is marked by empathy and a deep understanding of human nature, with stories ranging from dramatic and humorous narratives to sensitive portrayals of everyday lives.
The book also includes an English introduction, "Binodini and the Short Story", by L. Somi Roy, which discusses Binodini's development as a short-story writer, her literary style and the significance of her work in modern Manipuri literature.
About the Author
Maharaj Kumari Binodini Devi (1922–2011) was a major figure in modern Manipuri culture and literature. She wrote across several literary forms, including novels, short stories, essays, plays, radio plays, screenplays, lyrics and ballet scripts. Her short stories established her as an important storyteller in Manipuri literature.
